You have to select at least two images to use auto-fill exposure number operation. After you selected the necessary files and clicked Auto-fill exposure number you can review the numbers in the following dialog:

You can change the first exposure number and the other exposure numbers would be updated correspondingly. After you reviewed the exposure numbers, select OK to write the metadata.
